Brown cloth with black stamping and gilt stamped picture of the Hall of Philosophy at Chautauqua (modeled after the Parthenon), the Center of the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle (CLSC). Part of The After-School Series. Laid inside is a student brochure for the CLSC, with the exact same picture of the Chautauqua Hall in black and white, labeled/titled, and dated 1884-1885, presumably for the incoming class to which this pamphlet was issued. Tri-fold, 7.25 X 4.5 inches folded closed, 13 x 7 opened. The pamphlet describes CLSC history and that of previous graduating classes. It also inicates the classes being offered, the books required, some associated costs and some general student information. Rubbing to spine ends and corners, purple cloth slightly darkened on spine, secure binding. Previous owner name and '1925' inked to ffep, Canadian church book room sticker on title page, no other markings. A novel about the White Slave Traffic. From the Preface: 'In the sad story of Ethel Vale is to be found the full fruit of those twin monstrosities, Poverty and Drink.'

Decorative half leather with marbled paper boards, tooled gilt and bands on spine. Edges bumped and a little chipped, with mild exposure. Pages slightly age-toned, else unmarked. Binding secure. Ivor Thord-Gray (1878 - 1964) was a Swedish adventurer and soldier. After numerous travels and jobs/roles in Africa, Asia, Mexico, and Russia, he settled in the United States, becoming a citizen in 1934. In addition to this book, he wrote a book about his experiences in the Mexican Revolution, 'Gringo Rebel: Mexico 1913-1914.'

Name inside written in antique fountain pen ink. Light foxing, mostly to margins and endpapers. Overall in very good condition. Thomas Chalmers (1780-1847), was a Scottish minister, theologian, political economist, and a leader of the Free Church of Scotland.

Piece of jacket missing at top edge/spine head, about four inches in length, and a half inch down from edge. DJ has mild foxing and rubbing, and a few other tiny chips to edges. Spine label bright white, cloth shows light wear, front board has very slight bend. Inside very mild tnning, text pages clean and unmarked.

Red and blue cloth with gilt in beautiful art nouveau design on front, small print in gilt at bottom left corner reads 'Masert Gr. Stuttg.' Page edges bright gilt. Frontis of 'Birth if the Savior,' followed by tissue guard and title page; illustrations throughout. Spine has been professionally restored, binding repaired, and new slipcase made to preserve this handsome volume. Mild foxing to interior, but does not detract from overall beauty. Collection of poetry/songs about the life of Jesus the Christ.

Glossy marbled endpapers, profusely illustrated; the numerous portrait plates with facsimile signatures are especially striking, and they accompany the wonderful biographical sketches which were added to this expanded 2nd edition. Leather is heavily scuffed and rubbed, with board exposure at corners, and 1x2' piece missing from spine head of Vol 1, exposing paper backstrip. Spine leather is dry. Hinges starting a little, else binding quite secure. Pre-owner's name and date (1889) on ffeps, in lovely quill or fountain pen handwriting. A very small amount of foxing/tanning, mostly in early pages. 1028 + 1236 pps. Size: Thick 4to 9' - 13' tall
