Neatly removed from a nonce volume, and spine reinforced with archival paper. 8.75" x 5.5" Stewart (1827-1909), American lawyer and politician, left Yale University in 1850 to join the Gold Rush to California, soon moving on from San Francisco to begin mining in Nevada City, California. By 1860, he had gone on to Virginia City, Nevada, where he helped develop the Comstock Lode and took part in drafting a constitution for the new state of Nevada (1864). By 1903, he was one of the richest men in the Senate, a silver-mine owner with estimated net worth of 25 million dollars. Beyond money matters, he is recognized as the author of the Fifteenth Amendment to the Constitution: "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.

1890. Original manuscript. Very Good. 2pp on two leaves of Campbell's Executive Department letterhead with an engraved view of City Hall. He addresses the editor as an old friend, congratulating him "upon the magnificent improvements just made to the Chronicle...," noting "the evidence of prosperity" and "your ability and peculiar adaptability for the paper and place...." Most of this letter centers on Mayor Campbell's political career, in part, "...I was asked to head the ticket this spring, to redeem the city from Democratic rule, with a majority of 635 staring me in the face...." He goes on to tell of "an annexation bill (which I strongly favored)....But it is not choice amusement to fight two campaigns in six weeks...in a city of 54 square miles...and yet I had 53 more votes than the next highest man on the ticket...," &c., &c. Dated 21 April 1890. 8.25" x 10.75". Neat archival repairs on verso, accompanied by the soiled and worn mailing envelope.

In the original pictorial covers, 12" x 9" Cowboy Copas (1913-1963) was born Lloyd Estel Copas in Muskogee, Oklahoma. During his career, he appeared on more than 200 radio stations as well as the Grand Ole Opry, and recorded many songs. Copas was killed in the same plane crash that took the life of Patsy Cline.
