Marlise James was a New York journalist in the early Seventies, with a Master's degree from Columbia, when a series of strange events led to her meeting medicine man Sun Bear. The details of James's transformation into a tribal commune leader, after fighting resistance from without (by Native Americans) and within, make absorbing reading. While her visions are not as glamorous as some, they retain more credibility, especially in the context of earthy ecological beliefs often difficult to handle (like learning to prepare and eat road kills).
