Letter of Colonel Bomford on Ordnance Duty to The Secretary of War Relative to the Number of Arms Required Annually to Supply the Militia of the West. House of Representatives: Washington, 1823. Printed Pamphlet totals 6 pages. Measures 5.75 x 8.75 inches. When the United States Army was reorganized in 1821, the Ordnance and Artillery Departments were merged with Colonel Comford promoted to full colonel and attached to the artillery. In 1823 the United States was fighting the Arikara Indians in the first plains Indian War and asserting control of the Western Hemisphere against further colonization by European powers. This text breaks down cost and quantity of artillery required by Bomford to support military efforts in the American west. Toning around edges does not affect text. Front page detached. Text is clean. Overall very good condition.

Wash - GPO: Government Printing Office. 3/4 tan leather and marbled paper hardback in good plus condition due to some hairline; mostly closed-splitting at the front cover outside hinge at the top a few inches vertical and the bottom about 4-5 inches vertical closed tear. Tightly hinged but outside joint starting on both ends. Other very light wear and minor rubs. Contains an original "Hamlin Library of Hebron Academy" colored yellow bookplate from about the same time period as when the book was published mounted to the front pastedown. Also has has an old ink pen inscription in period ink "Presented to Hebron Academy by Hon. H. Hamblin 1876" - probably not in Hamblin's hand-writing but a holograph by a librarian or the person who originally accepted the book for the library. Ripley, together with a handsome first edition copy of his *History of Company F, First United States Sharp Shooters*. Ripley was wounded and later received the Medal of Honor for heroism as second in command of the 1st U.S. Sharpshooters at the Battle of Malvern Hill (July 1, 1862).
