Description:
Sydney, Australia: Craftsman House, 2001. Akio Makigawa is a Japanese/Australian sculptor whose work can be contextualized within a Western art tradition while remaining within the realm of a Japanese aesthetic sensibility. He was born in Japan in 1948 and came to Perth, Western Australia in 1974 to work with sailmakers where his understanding of the forces of wind and water had a great effect on his sculpture. He received his art education in Australia and has worked with a variety of materials including papier mache, river stones and most recently marble. He is renowned for his public sculpture which is both redolent with spiritual symbolism and conceived to relate to the architectural environment. He is represented in state collections throughout the country.
