Description:
Taipei: SMC, 2003. In the winter of 1696, the Imperial Chinese gunpowder stores in Fuzhou exploded. Having heard that China's newly acquired land, Taiwan, was rich in the sulfur needed to replace the lost gunpowder, officials dispatched an adventurous literati, Yu Yonghe, across the Taiwan Strait to extract the mineral. Based on Yu's diaries, the present volume is a portrait of 17th century Taiwan and its early relations with China. At once an adventure tale and a unique history of the period which gave birth to modern Taiwan. xx, 242 pp., 12 col. & 41 b&w illustrations, many of which are early maps.. First Edition. Hardbound. New/new. 23 x 16 cm..
