MAJOR AND ESSENTIAL reference to iconography of Rio de Janeiro from 1530-1890 produced by artists, cartographers, scientists and travellers. Details the formation of the city from it's beginning and identifies more than 4,500 maps, designs, prints and paintings by more than 490 artists. 200 pieces were selected with analysis by Ferrez (b. Brazil, 1908-2000). Last and most monumental work of Ferrez who died as the project was coming to publication. Gilberto Ferrez began his collection in 1934 and was considered to be one of great collectors of iconographic images of Brazil.
