His other interest was horse racing, hence the title 'Frigates and Fillies' and the author was a keen horse rider winning a number of important horse races. B & W photos

Following the family tradition of military service , Charles Poynder entered Dartmouth Royal Naval College at the age of 13. WWII started two years later and the young Poynder found himself serving in the famous cruiser, Kenya as part of a Malta convoy. He ended the war in Subic Bay in the Philippine Islands and took part in the japanese surrender of Hong Kong.
