Toothpicks were around in the time of Neanderthals, however it was in the 16th and 17th centuries that the became a table item and hence the need for holders. The first toothpick-manufacturing machine was developed in 1869, another was patented in 1872, by Silas Noble and J. P. Cooley. Toothpick holders went from simple box or packet they came into to elaborate glass with silver holders. This book covers them all.
