The plot was always similar: the ecstatic love-making of a knight and a lady (not his wife) is interrupted by the dawn, signalled by bird song or the call of a watchman. The poems were written in Provecal, in Medieval French, and in Middle High German, and they later appeared in England as parts of longer works by Chaucer and Shakespeare.
