Description:
Sydney: William Collins, 1986. 1st ed.. Hardback octavo, dustjacket, good condition (in very good jacket), minor edgewear jacket (little rubbed), spine ends boards little rubbed, pages toned, edges lightly foxed, stamp bottom edge. 174 pp. The Lady Lost in Time, by Nancy Cato (William Collins, 1986). First edition. Novel by Australian author Nancy Cato about the art and life of Mary Beale. Many years ago the author acquired, by accident, a 17th century portrait. This led to an interest in the Stuart portrait painters, and during two visits to London in the late 1970s she began to look into the story of Mary Beale. The result of this study is a charming historical novel. The author gives us a vivid insight into life in artistic circles over 300 years ago, the trials and heartbreaks of running a household and raising a family in plague-torn London, and the courageous story of Mary Beale, who was intent upon liberating herself from the considerable constraints of 17th century society.
