Mstislav Valerianovich Dobuzhinsky, a Russian graphic and theater artist who was a member of the St. Petersburg art association "World of Art," resided in Lithuania from 1925 to 1939 and played an active role in shaping the artistic identity of the magazine. Notably, Dobuzhinsky was responsible for creating the colorfully stylized cover of the magazine.

The first, massive catalogue raisonne for Niklavs Strunke (1894-1966), one of the most talent and prolific artists who was an essential element in the avant-garde group in Riga from 1918-1929. He was a painter, graphic designer, designer for the theater and costume designer decorative artist, and ubiquitous presence in the art world in Latvia until he emigrated to Sweden in 1944. Consisting of hundreds of plates and photographs documenting the life of this important Latvian artist, the work includes essays weighing over 9 lbs. Extensive essays by Aija Braslina, Ilze Martinsone, Edite Tisheizere, and Valdis Villeruss explore the artist's life and place in 20th century Latvia, and his extensive work in his travels to the Mediterranean and presence in Sweden. A good deal of the text is provided in English translation. Strunke is an important artist whose contribution to modern art is not to be missed. Tartu: Noor-Eesti Kirjastus, 1931 Octavo, boards, 253pp. Karl Aben translated this collection of contemporaneous avant-garde Latvian literature, with work by Jaunsudrabins, Akuraters and Pavils Rozits, with a prefatory chapter for each author. This was the first of what would have been a series of translations from new Latvian literature. Cover design by Richard Kivit. These works signal the end of the avant-garde, experimental era of Latvia, when in 1932 much of the content was deemed subversive and suppressed. Worldcat finds no copies of this title worldwide.

Felix Lukins Assembled by the Roerich Museum Society of Friends" With tributes,essays and encomia of 58 scholars, co-workers, artists and writers who knew Dr Felix Lukins. Contributors include Nikolai Roerich and his wife Helena. Lukins (1875-1934) was a renowned homeopath and physician who also founded the Roerich Society which later, under the guidance of Rihards Rudzitis, developed the Roerich Museum in Riga. Lukins is quite renowned in Latvia as a multitalented physician and homeopath. He also introduced many cures from Himalayan research and travels. The book is filled with visionary and symbolist paintings by Roerich, Ciurlionis, Liberts, etc., and with numerous photos of Lukins and his biographical milieu. Sculptor. Studies at Stiglitz's Central School for Technical Drawing (1893-1899), a graduate of the Classes of Decorative Painting and Etching, a winner of scholarship for studies abroad. Participation in the activities of Latvian artists' union "Rukis". He took up sculpting in Paris, where he attended Rodin's studio under A. Bourdelle. A novelist and poet, his prose work tended towards satire, especially directed at bourgeois life and culture, and he was widely published. He was known for his translations from Russian, and was aligned with pro-Russian leftist groups. The present work (Road to Paradise)is a novelette. The cover artist was Jekabs Kazaks (1895-1920), one of the most promising of the Riga Artists Group and his early death was a loss to the avant-garde. Rare: no library holdings found in North America.
