Very good (insect damage to top and bottom edges of covers, otherwise fine) in fine dust jacket (small price sticker presumably covers the original price on the inside of the dust jacket). Brodsky often writes about William Faulkner. Here, his poetry springs not only from his familiarity with Faulkner's work--poems, for example, titled "Dilsey" and "Miss Emily" and a section titled "Rowan Oak and the Ghosts of Yoknapatawpha"--but from his own experiences and observations of Mississippi. 93 pages.. 1st Edition thus. Josiah Gilbert Holland was enormously popular during his lifetime (1819-1881) but is of interest today primarily because of his friendship with Samuel Bowles (listed as the printer on this book) and Emily Dickinson whom he and his wife visited and corresponded with. This is a long narrative poem in iambic pentameter, surprisingly fresh today in Holland's occasionally epigrammatic style (e.g., "Who never walks save where he sees men's tracks/ Makes no discoveries," these words put in the mouth of the woman of the title). 287 pages plus 4 pages of Scribner's works for the Autumn of 1867. Also noteworthy are a laudatory review of a book by Willa Cather scholar Susan Rosowski and a story by Tony Ardizzone. Vantage Press was a vanity publisher in the 1960s. The author would have paid to publish and then hoped to recoup from later sales. An ordained minister, much of Morris' poetry is religious in nature, but he opens his book with three poems about astronauts John Glenn, Scott Carpenter and Gordon Cooper.
