Description:
St Louis: Timeless Press, 1990. Originally published in 1983, here is the first printing of the revised edition. Very good (insect damage to top and bottom edges of covers, otherwise fine) in fine dust jacket (small price sticker presumably covers the original price on the inside of the dust jacket). Brodsky often writes about William Faulkner. Here, his poetry springs not only from his familiarity with Faulkner's work--poems, for example, titled "Dilsey" and "Miss Emily" and a section titled "Rowan Oak and the Ghosts of Yoknapatawpha"--but from his own experiences and observations of Mississippi. 93 pages.. 1st Edition thus. Description:
New York: Charles Scribner & Co, 1867. Very good (some light edgewear and at spine; some foxing on the last couple of pages where the publisher's list of coming books is but no foxing on the text. The first owner's name is written in ink on the second free end paper, simply, "Ella. Dec 3rd 1867." The book is very clean and tight with bright gilding on all page edges. Attractive green binding with gilt design). Josiah Gilbert Holland was enormously popular during his lifetime (1819-1881) but is of interest today primarily because of his friendship with Samuel Bowles (listed as the printer on this book) and Emily Dickinson whom he and his wife visited and corresponded with. This is a long narrative poem in iambic pentameter, surprisingly fresh today in Holland's occasionally epigrammatic style (e.g., "Who never walks save where he sees men's tracks/ Makes no discoveries," these words put in the mouth of the woman of the title). 287 pages plus 4 pages of Scribner's works for the Autumn of 1867. New Haven: Cameron Associates, 1958. Very Good (some light edgewear at spine) in Good+ dust jacket (edgewear at spine with a missing chip at the top; heavily sunned spine; 2 scrapes on front panel, possibly from sticker removal). The blurb on one dust jacket fold points out her point-of-view on modern Western marriage: "...except in rare and fortunate instances, the marriage is founded upon a deep and pervasive misunderstanding. This misunderstanding (shared by both sexes...) is a profoundly wrong interpretation of woman's presence in society at large and in marriage as a microcosm of that society." 160 pages.. 1st Edition.
