Each page has the name of a different month in orange script, in French, at the lower right corner, with a gilt-embellished full-color miniature medieval print of unknown [but probably modern] origin tipped-in above in each case, the subject of which corresponds to that page's particular month. Exposed image area in images is 15.5" x 6.5" (wood frame not included). A meticulously drawn image of a chained, nude slave, from behind, whip lash mark on the slaves torso and legs. Slave is mesomorphic, well-toned muscularly, but has something of an androgynous appearance from behind. O. Raymond Sowers created illustrations for ERB-dom - i.e. Edgar Rice Burroughs-related publishing; see Erbzine (June 1974 issue (no.77)] and The Pulp Era, including the cover for no. 70, 1969). Probably created as a fantasy story illustration, but a dramatic piece for a BDSM decor theme, as well. Frame not included. BG303

no place: unknown, 1935. No Binding. Fine. Fine vintage painting in Very Good vintage frame. Large; outside frame dimensions are 36" x 30". See scanned images. The painting has been identified as a likely early-to-mid-twentieth century Japanese Painted Paper Panel; it is executed on an Old Gold-hued material with a silk-like appearance (though it is probably a type of paper), impregnated with occasional gold glitter flecks. The border is Old Gold color silk brocade. Subject is a peaceful rural village, and it's one which has a remarkably tranquilizing effect when it is studied in solitude; hence, may have been executed in a Zen spirit. The combination of that spirit with an oddly gold-luminous appearance in certain lighting from certain angles, and its large size, yields a rather unique experience for the viewer, at times. Crafted by a master of the craft, Shigeo Asao, with pitch-black ink on paper. Originally a method of rules for teaching cursive writing to children, "Spencerian Penmanship" was created in the mid-1800's by Platt Rogers Spencer, who grew up admiring the graceful lines of the John Hancock signature on the Declaration of Independence, and his five sons. It stood in contrast to Italian calligraphy [which was developed for speed only] particularly in its capital letters, which were to be accomplished in artful flourishes unique to the writer's style. The birds, the lady's robes, and a few morning sunbeams are trimmed in shimmery motes of glitter. So much the quintessence of art deco - and of something else that's a bit inexplicable - that I really hate to even sell it. It's on my wall for now. Annotations on the back, including the remark "inside front", have the look of a layout editor's comments, indicating possible publication somewhere, though his for-pay career as an artist, by conventional record, started in 1972 when he began to illustrate for T-shirts in Maryland - and then went on to become one of the great sci-fi and fantasy artists of the past three decades. Provenance contact provided to purchaser. This is a picture of a Musketeer in mid-combat, thrusting his sword outward at the viewer (see scan), as might have been done for a men's adventure magazine.
