Albany: Little & Company Law Booksellers, 1850. Thick Octavo. 871 pages. Very scarce. A copy is located in the ULCA Law Library but not any on OCLC though a variant is found there in the New York Supreme Court Library. Much is found on the issues of transportation involving bridges, canals, plank roads and railroads. This rare issue lists also for the first time all the county clerks, judges and sheriffs (see the copyright notice on verso of title page). An important look at New York state in 1850 with some details on government found nowhere else. Bound in 3/4 calf over green paper covered boards, red leather label gilt, joints are tender, wear to corners and spine ends, only an occasional spot of foxing, more so to endpapers.

(Morning Sun Books, Edison, NJ, 1990). First Edition. Quarto. First printing. 128pp. This is a photographic adventure on the New York Central Railroad, two decades from 1944 to 1964. Starting from Boston, the sequence of pictures moves west over the Berkshire Hills to the Hudson Valley then across New York State into Ohio, passing through Cleveland, Toledo, and Cincinnati. This journey captures the nostalgia of steam and first generation diesels in action mixed with a few unites from Central's final years.A very good copy bound in gray cloth lettered and decorated in silver, spine lettering silver, previous owner's inscription marked with whiteout. In very good pictorial dust jacket.

New York; (1965): Bonanza Books. First Edition. Quarto. 190 pp .illustrated with several very early photographic images, most never published before. These pictures combined with the author's delightful "round house" story telling and his unusual talent for reciting history accurately, yet interestingly, bound in orange cloth, spine lettering black. A very good copy in very good clipped pictorial dust jacket with light wear to spine ends and edges.

(Milwaukee; 1968): Kalmbach Publication. First Edition. Quarto Oblong. 127pp. index.170 photographic images. This is the biography of a 2-8-2-....a book about one steam locomotive. Locomotive 4501 is very much the story of all steam, the rail locomotion that overcame America's seaboard and riverfront isolation, created our cites, and hauled us through two world Wars. Bound in green cloth stamped in blind, spine lettering gilt near fine in very good pictorial dust jacket with light rubbing and soiling.

1937. J.P. (John Peter) Laux became a Master Mechanic in 1915 for the Lehigh Railway and rose to Superintendent of Motive Power when Lehigh RR was its highest. He produced this manuscript of which there are no known original copies there are 57 hand mounted photographs in the basic engines and concludes with the Locomotive Ownership by year, 1856-1936. The Average Tractive Force in 1921 was 37,621 lbs but by 1936 it had increased to 51, 293 lbs. The No. 5100 was delivered in 1931 as a class T-1 (two were delivered, Richard Duley notes Baldwin also delivered later at Class T-1a). This original work complements minor details in Duley's significant contribution. There are no copies on OCLC. Since the age of steam ended, these magnificent workhorses were often scrapped. Written by two military railway officers, tells the story of this unique railway from before and after World War I and traces its subsequent development and decline . eventually closing in 1969.A very good copy bound in brown cloth, spine lettering gilt, one lightly bumped corner, in pictorial dust jacket showing minor shelf wear and small stick resdiue to front free endpaper.

While many assume the laying of track was a simple matter, it was often delayed by poor engineering and the lack of trained trackmen. The Book of Rules in the back is one of the most carefully written guides to railroad engineers. The questions of durability as well as the major issue of water's corrosive aspect are dealt with, with many charts and basic math needed to be an effective designer of mine tracks. Bound in black cloth, spine lettering gilt, previous owner's name, near fine.

Mounted on Card, Photograph identified only as a New York Central Locomotive #399 but obviously a celebration of an event with passenger cars making connections for the first time in one of the Eastern cities. There are dignitaries (also unidentified) many in top hats and dignified dress greeting the connection. A poster mounted below the train mentions Lyman Howe. He had begun working for the Central Railroad of New Jersey and began experimenting in the 1890's with motion pictures this item is earlier, ca. 1885. Lyman was a traveling salesman and entertainer. As an original railroad photograph it is important for early Eastern railroad history but not further identified as to location or the precise date of the event. A nice photo mounted on display card.

Colorado Springs, CO: Railroad View Publishing Co, 1904. String Tied. Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. 24pp. 24 views of the short line Cripple Creek railroad, consisting of canyon country's most breathtaking wonders. A splendid window to blue skies ond beauty in the southwest, a secret known only to the railroads. This issue is in dark green paper panels, with red letters and mounted photograph. The interior is clean and tight, however, the front cover has detached, and has two closed tears.

1 page hand written internal document of Simeon Baldwin's Purchase of 200 shares of the stock of the New York and Harlem Railroad [they do not treat it as a compound word; hence, rail road] The New York Legislature approved the Corporation in April of 1831. This document is a month later (May 30, 1831) addressed to a "Dear Sir" [note clearly identified but addressed to: Joseph Wallis, New York, May 30, 1831] and signed by Simeon Baldwin, Esq. on the verso. Remains of the seal present. It addresses Gentlemen in the second part (presumably the Commissioners of the New York & Harlem Rail Road Company] and asks that the letter be addressed to Silas E. Buitoavs [one of the 13 Commissioners]. A very early document of the first railroad in New York.

4 1/2" x 4" original photograph of what was called Frank Murphy's "impossible railroad". He had already managed the rich Congress Mine and the legendary United Verde Mine at Jerome. Now in 1897 his Prescott and Eastern Line was organized with full grading beginning in 1898. Since it would connect with the Santa Fe, Prescott and Phoenix Railway (just north of Granite Dells) it would start at what is called the P & E Junction at what was called previously the "Point of Rocks", an area where wagon trains and stage coaches had caused travelers to fear. Since the work was difficult to find workers, the local sheriff would use prisoners for which they would receive pay. The photograph here also has an advertisement which reads on a the rock to the left: "Go to Star Lodging House Phoenix". This photograph shows the first small but major station on the route. Short closed eade tear to upper edge.

Octavo. 187pp., Collected stories and rare photographs of the Pennsy rolling stock of the 1890s through the 1920s. as well as those men who ran them. Written in railroad language, expressly for the dyed-in-the-wool enthusiast. Bound in red cloth lettered in black, spine lettering black. Previous owner's name stamp, another owner's name has whiteout on it, lightly rubbed along the bottom edges. A very good copy in pictorial dust jacket with light wear to spine ends.
