[48] p.; 26 cm. Dark blue leather spine with gilt-stamped spine title; dark blue cloth over boards. Dark blue endpapers. Slipcase has dark blue cloth on spine and ends with light blue paper on sides. Bound by Sloves Bindery. An out-of-series copy. William Benton (1900-1973) represented Connecticut in the United States Senate from 1949 to 1953 and served as U.S. Ambasador to UNESCO in Paris from 1963 to 1968. Contains birthday congratulations from Reginald Marsh, as well as numerous business and political acquaintances. Book and slipcase are in Fine Condition.

Each volume has on the front fixed endpaper the small embossed blue-and-white oval label of the bookbinder, J. Hewetson, Hampstead. Philadelphia: Sol Mednick and Arthur Williams, 1946. Very Good. [104] p.: 19 full-page and 5 half-page illustrations; 36 cm. Loose signatures housed in card portfolio with black cover title. This is an unnumbered copy out of a limited edition of 100 copies, set in Airport Black Type by Typographic Service; the plates were printed by the Beck Engraving Co. Surrealist painter and printmaker Dmitri Petrov (1919-1986) was born in Philadelphia and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. The poems by English poet Thomas Hood (1799-1845) illustrated here by Petrov are: The Dream of Eugene Aram -- The Last Man -- The Song of the Shirt -- The Key: A Moorish Romance -- The Stag-Eyed Lady: A Moorish Tale -- The Bridge of Sighs. This is number 198 of a limited edition of 800 copies. Set in monotype Walbaum at the Out of Sorts letter foundery in Mamaroneck, N.Y. and printed on mould-made Magnani paper at the Shagbark Press in South Portland, Me. The lithographs were printed on hand-made Japanese paper at Trestle Editions, N.Y. City. The book design was by Benjamin Shiff. Hand-sewn and hand-bound by Carol Joyce. Contains a brief history of the Scottish typefounders Miller & Richard and the complete text of H.R. 3671, an 1876 brief for the relief of the firm against efforts by American typefounders seeking to make it harder for Miller & Richard to import their type to San Francisco. In Godkin's letter, first published in the London Daily News on March 7, 1865, he reflects on Abraham Lincoln's accomplishments in his first term as president. Written shortly after Lincoln's inauguration to his second term, the letter's praise for his work is poignant given that he was assassinated five weeks later. The illustrations are reproduced from Old Provence by T.A. Cook, with permission of Charles Scribner's Sons. "Copyright 1911 by Walter H. Bonsall" -- at head of first page of text. This was probably the Walter H. Bonsall who was a printer in Germantown (Philadelphia), suggesting that this was printed in Philadelphia. Top page edges gilt. Grey endpapers. Light grey ribbon bookmark. Printed on watermarked Roycroft paper. Woodcut border and initials by unidentified Roycroft artists.
