American Telegraph Company, April 30, 1861. Very good. One 14 x 21 cm one-sided page with vertical and horizontal stripe. Message sent to William Cauldwell, SEcretary, Office of Sunday mercury. "Am prevented from attending the meeting at Fordham. John Jay." American lawyer John Jay (1817-1894) was active in the anti-slavery movement, elected president of the New York Young Men's Antislavery Society, and published several speeches and pamphlets on slavery. During his legal career, he defended numerous fugitive slaves in court and helped several gain freedom. He became one of the founders of the Republican Party in 1854. In 1869 President Ulysses S. Grant appointed him as US minister to Austria-Hungary where he served until 1875. This telegram was sent to William Cauldwell (1824 – 1907), publisher of the New York Sunday Mercury; Cauldwell was called the "Father of Sunday Journalism" and also served in the New York State Senate.

Other parts of the world are compared to Kansas ie. Iceland is about half its size, etc.

1927. Softcover. Good. 136 p.19 cm. B&w illustrations. Brown paper covers. Chipped bottom front corner and spine ends. Rusted staples. Covers stained. On May 18, 1927, Andrew Kehoe, a farmer and local school board member angry over losing an election for town clerk and under notice for foreclosure, killed his wife, detonated bombs in his house and farm buildings, and at the same time set off a bomb in the consolidated school. He drove to the school in a truck rigged with more explosives, which he detonated next to the school superintendent. In all, Kehoe killed 44 people, 38 of them children, and himself, in the worst school mass murder in U.S. history. Includes bios of the deceased and poetic tributes.

A self-published play with a military theme. Bilibid served as the central prison of the Philippines during both the Spanish and American occupation of the islands. During World War II the Japanese converted it into a hospital and clearing centre for American POWs. The author, a Pasadena doctor, was really named Max Pohlman. Includes a play review at rear.

Intended as a reference for newspaper editors and artists. Text begins "Texas is an Empire" and continues with descriptions of Austin, Beaumont, Dallas, Houston. Lots of Lone Star pride here.
