A few tears that have been repaired within, and it is an ex-library copy, so a few faint traces of stamps here or there. Fold-out frontispiece print. Numerous in-text and full-page illustrations, depicting prisons, prisoners, London, etc. Lots of facts and figures as well. Volume Three in Mayhew's 'Great Metropolis' set, but complete in itself. Internally clean. The London so graphically described by Dickens was almost totally ignored by contemporary artists. It was George Scharf (1788 - 1860) who filled the gap between Hogarth, Rowlandson and Gillray and the era of photography and pictorial journalism. Scharf recorded changes to buildings and streets long vanished, for example, whole areas were torn down to make way for Trafalgar Square and New London Bridge.
