Pages i and ii are missing- title p and publication data - but seem never to have been bound in. (Publication data taken from other copies). The book has been restored - marble paper on boards is new; spine has been repaired; leather has been re-coloured and oiled; there is one fold-out diagram of table layout, which is missing about 1/6th; much foxing, the worst of which has been cleaned; all pages tanned and edges browned. Hand-written recipes are glued to the verso of both covers and another on verso of one of the two b&w illustrations. Of interest is the early use of "s" which replaced the earlier "f" and a very early "oxford channel" on the spine. A collector's item and rare.

Covers are partially faded, somewhat discoloured / foxed and, on the rear,- spotted; spine was loose, now restored with paper and recoloured ; front edge rough cut; all corners re-inforced, edges worn. Hand-made paper with some, as is usual, inclusions but white and bright; appears unread. Prev owner's name and address in pencil, could be easily erased but left in to show provenance: Mrs E Weissenberg of Sea Point in Cape Town. 12 wood-cuts. Very rare especially in this condition. Please expect extra postage overseas. The First and last Psalms are illustrated.

Dust jacket has replaced chips 80x15, 12x10, 12x4, 8x10mm - looks good on the shelf; spine somewhat faded from scarlet to pinkish. Book is faded from black to grey at head & tail. dj complete; spine was faded completely, now reworked; NOT price-clipped . Book in red and cream "Sundour" cloth in Very clean condition with very light foxing on 8 pages opposite the 8 illustrations, no inscriptions; delightful b&w cartoons at the end of each chapter. This famous satirical novel is both an adventure story and a devious philosophical reflection on the constitution of modern societies and makes it so much more than a childrens' classic.

2 names on front boards - R W McL and A West--tt; numerous annotations in text and illustrations - most in lead pencil, some in col pencil. Boards slightly rubbed but easily legible; front was loose - now spine is repaired with new front end paper; last signature has been re-sewn. All pages uniformly and lightly tanned - no foxing. There are modern reprints but this original is extremely rare. The same E Th wrote at least 3 reports on Natural History and 4 more on the coinage of India.

Dust jacket and book touched up on all corners; head and tail are lightly scuffed. Square spine. Coloured end papers illustrative of Toytown showing Gollywog. Mr Golly features in the text. No name on "This book belongs to.....". This is #2 in the series and lists titles up to #24, which was printed around 1958. Maybe a first edition but NOT first printing. It has SBN numbers (NOT ISBN) .... 361 00457 5) and a copyright date of 1950.
