Burch is a practiced writer, and in the late '50s was hanging around with the likes of James Baldwin, also with Elliot Baker, who blurbs her book admiringly. Her technique here is to present the story of Rosebud as it unfolds before a reader who has been granted ideal access to the data. First, comes the story of her death as reported in the newspapers. Then, the autopsy report, this broken down into three chapters (for reason of length certainly, and surely to soften its grimness); then author's interviews with Rosebud's associates, mostly young, mostly homeless, with their written statements where available.
