Description:
New York, 1855. 36pp, disbound, lacks wrappers. Light dustsoiling of outer leaves, title page partly loosened. Good+. The pamphlet is the creation of the American [Know-Nothing] Party's Twelfth Council, Fifteenth Ward, City of New York. This is the credo of the American Party, at its high-water mark: "America should be governed only by Americans." The next year former President Millard Fillmore would be the Party's candidate for president, in a three-way battle with Buchanan and Fremont, the first Republican presidential candidate. The Know-Nothings feared immigrants, who were "ignorant of our institutions and laws, often ignorant of our language, necessarily in all cases unimbued with the traditional and native sentiment which gives life and permanence to our institutions." OCLC records a number of institutional locations.

Description:
Philadelphia: Stereotyped by L. Johnson, for the Author, 1833. 64pp, stitched in original printed wrappers [bit of wear]. Foxed moderately, Good+. An expose of Romanism, in the 'I leap over the wall' genre. Various Philadelphia Protestant ministers endorse it, praise the author, and piously pray for "those of his friends who are left behind, in darkness and in ignorance, in that church." Smith tells his story, how he was misled, and how he finally saw the light. After starting life in Philadelphia, he moved to St. Louis. Its unhealthy climate and "the paroxysms of a violent fever" foolishly led to a "partnership in the fur-trade." He lost his shirt; then, vulnerable, he wandered into the Catholic Church. Three editions were published in 1833; this is the stated third. Sabin 84029. AI 21263 [5].

Boston, New-England: Printed by Thomas and John Fleet, 1766. 34, [2 blank] pp, with the half title as issued. Disbound, Very Good. Tucker, Pastor of the First Church in Newbury, praises rights of conscience, and warns against authoritarian edicts which make "the opinions of men the standard [italics in original] of divine truth." That, he says, "is the very foundation upon which popery stands, and the grand prop by which it has been supported from generation to generation. Popes and councils have fixed the sense of scripture, which must never be contradicted: They have determined and decreed what shall be the catholic faith, and to depart from this, on any pretence whatever, is deemed heresy." Description:
America: Printed at Providence (R. Island) by Carter and Wilkinson, and sold at their Book and Stationary Store, 1794. [4], iii, [1 blank], 83, [1 blank] pp + A Synoptical Table of Prophetic Numbers [folded, as issued]. Stitched, lightly worn, contemporary plain wrappers separated from text block. Very Good. Light rubberstamp in blank portion of title page. Bicheno says there is no "event so extraordinary as the late revolution in France." It heralds "the utter downfall of the papacy," "a fatal stroke to the papal usurpations, and to the reign of despotism." The author's research in the prophecies leads him to conclude "that the beast which John saw coming up out of the earth was Lewis the Fourteenth, or the French tyranny, perfected by him, and supported by his successors." Description:
Boston, New-England: Richard Draper..., 1759. 67, [12- Appendix], [1 blank] pp, lacking the half title. Disbound. Small institutional withdrawal rubberstamp at bottom corner of final blank. Light wear, closed tear [no loss] at leaf 45-46. Good+. "God has done many considerable, and some great things for us, in this time." Mayhew reviews the course of the War in unusual detail. He notes the now-dashed hopes of the French for "a descent upon the island of Britain, with a formidable army; and again to bring the Pretender on the stage." Mayhew, a defender of American religious liberty against both Anglican pretensions and the Pope of Rome, says that "we may, without much presumption, look on Canada as a conquered country." He predicts that Britain and the Americans may now cultivate peaceful relations with all the Indian tribes. FIRST EDITION. Evans 8417. Sabin 47149. ESTC W2543.

Description:
[London: Printed by J. Downing in Bartholomew-Close near West-Smithfield, 1702. Folio sheet, folded to 4pp. Each page 9" x 14-3/8." The imprint is from the colophon. Printed in dark Gothic type, with woodcut of Royal Arms at head of the title and large ornamental initial "W." Signed in type at the end, "COCKS", i.e., Richard Cocks. Old horizontal fold, minor dusting, generously margined. Very Good or better. This is one of three 1702 printings of the Charter of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts. All were printed by Downing, all are quite scarce, and differ only in minor typographic detail. Our copy has the catchword "Univer-" on page 1; signature "A" beneath the final "S" of "Professors"; the final paragraph of page 4 has twelve lines, naming 25 "members." The Charter was first printed in June 1701, at London. The Society's mission was to establish a stronghold in the American Colonies. Otherwise, "our loving subjects" will become the victims of "divers Romish priests…

Description:
[Philadelphia?, 1863. 8pp. Caption title [as issued]. Disbound with some loosening, light wear, Good+. A Democratic Justice of Pennsylvania's Supreme Court, Woodward ran for Governor in 1863. He had blamed the War on the Republicans, argued that no justification existed for excluding slavery from the Territories, and hinted that the South's secession was justified on grounds of self-defense. This anti-Woodward pamphlet shows that, at the 1837 State Constitutional Convention, he attempted to prevent foreigners from voting or holding office in Pennsylvania. "Now that he is a candidate for office and needs the foreign vote, look out for denials and contradictions of his sentiments!" LCP 11373. Bartlett 5959. Not in Eberstadt, Decker, Nevins, Sabin.
