His main focus seems to be on the actual history of the words and their usage both in the past and the present, mapping out their progress as they were transformed throughout the ages, similarly as language itself changes, never being an entirely fixed notion. Within the span of five chapters, Gilman strives to encompass the general notions and connotations surrounding the idea of decadence, all the while being aware that the book may only touch upon several of them, as the term came to denote too wide a spectrum of nuances to be completely covered in one single work.
