Newcastle: D. Bass Single sided printed broadside, approximately 225mm x 335mm in size, n.d. c.1803? Trimmed to edges, otherwise fairly bright and clean. Printed by D.[avid] Bass, Foot of Pilgrim Street, Newcastle, where he was based from 1801-1811. Bass printed chapbooks and other ephemera, including pornography and became bankrupt in 1811 (See Hunt, 'The Book Trade in Northumberland and Durham to 1860', pages 8-9). Probably printed in response to the threat of invasion by Bonaparte ("the Gallic despot"). Not in COPAC. First Edition. Unbound. Good. Folio. Broadside.

London: Pardon and Son, 1869. Double sided, lithographed ticket for the opening ceremony of Bunhill Fields cemetery, approximately 270mm x 190mm in size. Front with one or two tiny spots of foxing but is generally quite bright and clean, reverse with remnants of glue from once being stuck in an album, with some light discolouring and surface abrasion, but not affecting text. The reverse is a plan of the burial ground, with the location of prominent internees numbered (John Bunyan, Daniel De Foe, Richard Cromwell, Isaac Watts, Thomas Hardy, John Horne Tooke etc). It is the burial ground of Nonconformists. This 'opening ceremony', (it had already been in use for over two hundred years), was to celebrate the development of the site by the City of London. This involved laying out paths, undertaking tree planting and carrying out repair work to the tombs including re-cutting and recording inscriptions. London: Ian Purdie and Jake Prescott Defence Group Double sided printed broadsheet, approximately 230mm x 335mm in size, n.d. but probably 1971. Closed tear to left hand side and a small closed tear to top right hand corner, slightly creased and browned to edges, otherwise fairly clean. Supposedly members of the Angry Brigade, Purdie was found not guilty, but Prescott was found guilty of conspiracy to cause explosions and given fifteen years. He later apologised to Carr. A lady's admission ticket to the consecration of the new lodge in Blyth, Northumberland, which met on second Wednesday of the month according to Hyneman's 'Universal Masonic Record'. First Edition. London: No Publisher, 1792. Single sided manuscript note, approximately 185mm x 215mm in size. Creased from old folds, otherwise fairly bright and clean. Affidavit sworn at Mansion House on the 17th September, 1792, of ?Searles Wood, second mate on board the Essex East Indiaman, lately arrived from Bombay, affirming the death of a Charles Monk, late fifth mate on board the same ship, and that Monk had died on the island of Johanna, on or about the third day of October 1791. There were several East India Company ships called 'Essex', this one was launched in 1780 (and was replaced by another 'Essex' in 1803). Our unfortunate Mr. Monk died sailing on the fourth voyage, under a Captain Strover, which "sailed from Portsmouth on 17 May 1791, bound for Bombay. Essex reached Johanna on 28 September, and arrived at Bombay on 17 November. On 12 January 1792 she was at Surat, and she returned to Bombay on 22 January. 'Description of the Picture and Print Representing the Death of Lord Viscount Nelson, in the Battle Off Trafalgar', published by Edward Orme, and printed by J. Nichols, n.d. but probably c.1806, broadside, approximately 470mm x 295mm in size. Lightly browned and soiled, central crease from fold, chipped to edges, loss to bottom right hand corner, not affecting text, red ink staining to reverse, but without bleed through. A key with description, to the picture painted by William Marshall Craig, and Orme's engraving of it, of the death of Nelson aboard the 'Victory'; 2. 'The Funeral Car', engraved image, approximately 480mm x 280mm in size, published by R. Bowyer, 1808. Lightly soiled, creased from folds, otherwise fairly clean. No Place: No Publisher, 1877. Single sided printed ballad, approximately 125mm x 315mm in size. Lightly foxed, creased from old folds, couple of minor nicks to edges at folds, but fairly bright. A dialogue between W. and K. about a land sale, where W. notes that K. has enough money to buy the land over the local lord. K. states that W. couldn't even afford the deposit and bemoans Radicals assailing his property rights. W. then advises K. that Death is at hand, and he would do better to retire and marry a widow, rather than a young maid, as "It may be that the Lass for lucre's sake, To the old Man may in appearance take, But youth and beauty 'tis a shame to see, Grafted upon an old and sapless tree". Newcastle: T. Fordyce, 1865. Single sided printed broadside, approximately 225mm x 285mm in size. Lightly browned and creased, several small tears to left hand side, a few spots of light foxing. The printer was T.[homas] Fordyce, the brother of William (see Hunt, The Book Trade in Northumberland and Durham to 1860, page 36). The broadside relates to a statue of Charles II, which had been recently moved, which had "so greatly irritated some inveterate enemy to the Stuart race, and fiery zealot of the House of Brunswick, that on the 18th, the following most ill-natured pasquinade was found posted upon a door immediately under the statue". The said pasquinade is here reprinted, with a contemporary reply by Philanthropos. Not found in JISC. First Edition. Unbound. Good. 4to. Broadside.

Paris: Roger Tirand Double sided printed broadsheet, approximately 210mm x 270mm in size, n.d. early 1960's? Creased from central folds, creased to fore edge, very light water damage towards fore edge, lightly browned, otherwise fairly clean. Broadsheet noting the jailing of twelve men from Martinique, for "damage to the integrity of the territory, conspiracy against the authority of the state - this reason is commonly used to try to stop the protest of the democrats who express an opinion contrary to that of the government". Creased from old folds, slightly roughly opened around wax seal, with remnants of paper adhering to seal and a matching missing piece to the third page where it was folded, sealed and sent, slightly browned to edges, small remnants of paper where it was once in an album, but generally clean. Subscribers copy, William Brown, who is mentioned in the list of subscribers for the next year, donating 10s 6d. Brown was earlier involved in the Suffolk Society for the Education of the Poor in the Principles of the Established Church. First Edition. Unbound. Good. Folio. Ephemera.

London: Printed By P. Hondy for W. Byers Single sided printed broadside, approximately 230mm x 345mm in size, n.d. but 1820. Lightly browned and lightly creased, a couple of small holes to text catching letters but with no loss of sense, three words replaced in neat manuscript to first line of text, and date added beneath second column of title, otherwise good. Woodcut illustration to head. Neither the printer or publisher appear in the BBTI. Execution broadside relating the deaths of five of the Cato Street conspirators, who were hanged and then decapitated. The Cato Street conspiracy was a plan to assassinate the whole British cabinet at its monthly dinner. Thistlewood had already been tried for high treason after the Spa Fields riots, but was acquitted after the exposure of an 'agent provocateur'. Buckingham: Seeley, 1805. Single sided printed broadside, approximately 180mm x 300mm in size. Lightly browned generally, browned to head and foot with small amount of loss to bottom right hand corner, horizontal crease to centre, small black mark catching a couple of letters but with no loss of sense, a few small nicks and tears. Relating the practising of manoeuvres by the Royal Westminster Regiment and the Twickenham and Isleworth Volunteers in case of invasion by Bonaparte, noting that "however true it may be that the appearance of Invasion is, at this time, more distant than it has been at many periods, yet I believe no man will doubt, but that the same Power, which has dared to threaten England, still pants for her destruction ... Let it then be the boast of English Volunteers that to them has been assigned the illustrious task of completing a triple line of defence round the country which gave them birth". First Edition. Worcester: S. Gamidge and W. Pendrill, 1756. Single sided engraved broadside, approximately 265mm x 380mm (engraving), 335 x 450 (Frame). Lightly soiled, surface abrasion towards head on the left hand side, but not affecting image, several small worm holes, but again not affecting image or text. Vignette to head showing Penderel holding a billhook in the foreground, with the king on a horse in disguise to the background. Penderel's epitaph is recorded towards the bottom of the engraving, with an added note that George II had ordered that his monument be 'cleaned up & beautified in the year 1739'. Engraved broadside celebrating the life of Richard Penderel [Richard Pendrill], of Hobball Grange, Shropshire, who with his four brothers saved the life of Charles II after the battle of Worcester, hiding him from Cromwell's soldiers. Dursley: W. Rickards [Printer], 1810. Single sided printed leaflet, approximately 175mm x 220mm in size. Lightly stained to head, especially to reverse (possibly from glue), rubbed and creased. Reverse has the details in ink of the sheep stolen, detailing four instances over a couple of months in 1809 and 1810. Hand bill offering a substantial reward for information leading to the conviction of the offenders, one of the sheep mentioned was stolen, whereas the other was killed and the carcass stolen, "leaving the head and skin". Dursley is in Gloucestershire. The printer was W.[illiam] Rickards of Long Street, who advertises hand bills, cards etc. "printed at only One Hour's Notice". The BBTI has him at Silver Street between 1830 and 1842, and his press was registered in 1831, but clearly he had been printing for some time before then. First Edition. Unbound. Good. 8vo. Leaflet.

Ashby: W. And J. Hextall, 1839. Printed auction poster, approximately 265mm x 410mm in size. Creased from old folds, couple of small tears to sides of central crease, small patch of discolouring to top right hand corner, but generally fairly bright and clean. Advertising the sale of a pub and outhouses, and two cottages in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire. The Hextall's appear in the BBTI as late as 1851, William Hextall (presuming he is the W.) seems to have been apprenticed to J.G. Brown of London, being free in 1826, then a printer, bookseller and bookbinder in Leicester (Ramsden, page 89), before setting up in Ashby around 1835. First Edition. Unbound. Good. Elephant Folio. Malton: Barnby, 1835. Printed, single sided broadsheet, approximately 460mm x 285mm in size. Lightly browned, creased from old folds, couple of small tears to edges, but otherwise fairly clean. The yearly statement submitted to the General Annual Meeting of the Trustees. The printer was probably George Barnby, who was also a bookseller and the owner of a circulating library (BBTI). No Place: No Publisher Single sided trade card, approximately 95mm x 60mm in size, no publisher (presumably produced 'in house'), n.p. but almost certainly Glasgow, n.d. c.1853. Slightly discoloured to edges, especially left hand side, corners of reverse lightly glue stained. Gilmour [J.B.] and Dean [Alexander Davidson] are described as stationers and general printers, with account books, binding, paper ruling, embossing etc to foot. The address on the card isn't matched exactly in the SBTI, which has them at 86 Buchanan Street and 13 Exchange Place between 1846-52 and 86 Buchanan Street and 13 & 15 Exchange Place in 1853.
