The author, Nan Robertson (1926-2009), won a Pulitzer Prize for her article on her experience with toxic shock syndrome during her time as a reporter for the New York Times. In The Girls in the Balcony she recounts the history of women employees of that newspaper, in particular the federal class-action suit brought in 1974 against the paper seeking equal treatment with male employees. Book is in Near Fine Condition: "1992" written on front free endpaper; otherwise, clean and tight. Japan, 1910. Hardcover. Very Good -. 15 x 20 cm. album containing 52 postcards, 47 of them hand-colored. Black lacquer boards; front board illustrated with scene of a woman and a man painted in gilt and red. None of the postcards have been used and none have dates of publication. Some of the cards were produced by Tonboya in Yokohama; the firm was actively publishing hand-colored postcards from about 1910 to about 1930. The first postcard is a view of Mt. Fuji with a foreground illustration painted in gilt and black. The next two are portraits of Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken in black with a gilt emblem above each of their heads. The hand-colored views are of streets scenes, temples, and parks in Yohohama, Kamakura, Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, and Kamata; a number include geishas. There are two views of women in Yoshiwara. Philadelphia: John Buddy's Bread and Cake Bakery, 1850. Good. 1 receipt (8 x 20 cm.), printed along the upper edge: "John Buddy's Bread and Cake Bakery, S. W. corner Eighth and Locust streets." E. P. Fritz purchased 72 loaves of bread at 27 loaves for a dollar. John Buddy was a baker in Philadelphia in the 1840s and 1850s; he moved to 8th and Locust in 1850. E.P. Fritz was probably Elizabeth Fritz, who ran a boardinghouse on N. 4th St. from 1848 to 1851. In Good Condition: light creasing; one separation with old repair.

Contemporary half calf with six spine compartments between double gilt rules; red leather label in the second compartment with gilt-tooled title. Marbled paper over boards. All page edges speckled. Bound with the issues for March and June 1840, and April 1842, all of which lack their frontispieces. Bookplate on front fixed endpaper indicating that this book was given to the Belles Lettres Society of Dickinson College in 1842 by J. V. Follensbee. Joseph Vinton Follansbee, Sappington, Md., was a member of class of the 1846 but did not graduate. The May 1844 issue is of particular interest because it contains a poem by Fanny Kemble, "Lines Written at Night"; The Legal Wrongs of Women by an anonymous woman; and Female Novelists by W. A.
