Black lacquer boards; front board illustrated with scene of a woman and a man painted in gilt and red. None of the postcards have been used and none have dates of publication. Some of the cards were produced by Tonboya in Yokohama; the firm was actively publishing hand-colored postcards from about 1910 to about 1930. The first postcard is a view of Mt. Fuji with a foreground illustration painted in gilt and black. The next two are portraits of Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken in black with a gilt emblem above each of their heads. Contemporary half calf with six spine compartments between double gilt rules; red leather label in the second compartment with gilt-tooled title. Marbled paper over boards. All page edges speckled. Bound with the issues for March and June 1840, and April 1842, all of which lack their frontispieces. Bookplate on front fixed endpaper indicating that this book was given to the Belles Lettres Society of Dickinson College in 1842 by J. V. Follensbee. Joseph Vinton Follansbee, Sappington, Md., was a member of class of the 1846 but did not graduate. The May 1844 issue is of particular interest because it contains a poem by Fanny Kemble, "Lines Written at Night"; The Legal Wrongs of Women by an anonymous woman; and Female Novelists by W. A.
