Cover title: Reading Speller: A New Method of Teaching Spelling. Cover imprint: New York: Text Book Company Publishers. Includes words in both print and script, and maxims in script. Lessons are arranged by subject. Although the Text Book Company copyrighted this title in 1883, this undated edition by Taintor Brothers & Co., at 18 and 20 Astor Place, New York, could not have been produced before 1888, when Taintor began publishing at that address under that form of their business name. In Good+ Condition: cloth is rubbed through along upper back joint; corners are heavily rubbed; minor loss of paper over boards along edges; lacking front free endpaper; old repair of both hinges; title page and pp. 10-11 are soiled; otherwise pages are clean and tight.

Following the text of Elisha is a poem "Prayer for a New Heart." The American Tract Society used "150 Nassau St.," the address in the imprint, from 1833 to 1894. The typeface used here was adopted in 1848. No date of publication but produced no earlier than 1848. Former owner inscription on front free endpaper and following blank leaf: Elem Witmer 1871. Harry Castlemon was the pseudonym of Charles Austin Fosdick (1842-1915), the author of many 3-to-6-volume series for boys published following the Civil War. This volume presents the adventures of Don Gordon and his brother Hubert at Bridgeport Military Academy.
