The "Supplement to the Birds of Norfolk and Lord Howe Islands" is unbound and in its original fascicles 23 in total with one fascicle missing (pages 14 to 20). Typically this second supplementary volume is incomplete and ours is no exception but when you have such an important work and such a limited run, incomplete is better than nothing. In total, these two volumes have 49 hand colored plates including the very desirable images of the Penguins. Fine lithographed plates after J.G. Keulemans, H. Gronvold, R. Green, and F.W. Lovely illustrations of birds including the apteryx, cassowary, kingfisher, bird of paradise and lyre bird. Oblong 8vo not paginated, 10 leaves with 50 striking bird images, Tobacco advertisment in inside rear cover. Pictorial stiff paper wrappers, with ornate tilte in blue at front cover surrounded by birds of Paradice and humming birds; AG logo on back cover with more humming birds. String bound. Few chips at edges of covers, o/w very good.

The author is the great great granddaughter of John Gould, the famed English ornithologist who identified the birds now known as "Darwin's finches"; she has chosen to illustrate this work with over 400 illustrations from Gould's ten most important works. Folio, 304 pp, color illustrations throughout. Dark blue cloth covers with title in gilt on spine. Pictorial dj with title in black on bright green ground on front cover and spine. Dj is very good; internally immaculate.

The bird species are arranged by continent. There are five plates of Australian birds. The National Library of Australia holds a copy, but there are no other recorded holdings in Australia. 10 x 14", vg condition.

Paris: Gide, 1853. An exquisite stipple engraving with period hand color of the sulfur crested cockatoo, from Dumont D'Urville's "Voyage au Pole Sud et Dans l'Oceanie..." The French voyages in this period benefited from the French expansive world view, that saw artists & scientists accompanying the sailors on French voyages of exploration, recording scientific detail and assembling natural history collections. Jules Dumont D'Urville visited Australia twice, 1826-29 & 1837-40. His account of the second voyage was published in 1842 (text volumes); 1846 (atlas) and 1853 (natural history plates). During Dumont D'Urville's second voyage, they visited the North Coast of Australia (the attempted settlement at Port Essington & Torres Strait) and Tasmania. Image 40 x 27.5 cm with large margins. Plate 26 from the "Oiseaux" section. Exceptionally clean copy, with a hint of shading from an old mat outside the platemark. A tiny abrasion in the margin of the left side.
