Gotha: Justus Perthes , 1861. Vg, tinted map with 2 images. The dominant image is a fairlly detailed coastal chart, with depth soundings, of the Bay of Suez (northern end of Gulf of Suez). The second (upper) image is a sketch of the Spring of Moses, just to the west of the central portion of the gulf.f It comes from Petermann's "Geographische Mitteilungen". Petermann was a major figure in the 19th century explosion of thematic mapping (see Robinson: EARLY THEMATIC MAPPING...). He apprenticed with Steiler and later helped with the maps of Johnston's PHYSICAL ATLAS... (initially issued as a tribute to Berghaus). The full plate measures 9.75x7.5 inches. .
