Description:
London: John LaneThe Bodley Head, 1939. Uncorrected proof copy of the first edition.. Soft cover. Very Good. Undesignated proof copy with plain, unprinted wrappers. Octavo, drab, unprinted brown wrappers, sewn text block, pp. xxii, 852. Some minor buckling to gutters of pages towards the centre of the enormous text block. Rear cover with a small chip at one corner; and light staining just slightly affecting the gutters of the final few leaves. Certainly good or better. Given its bulk and fragility, I expect the survival rate of this proof was very low. Note "AW contributed an introduction (pp. ix -xxii) in which he deals with: the legend of the Chin P'ing Mei, the Chin P'ing Mei and the censorship, and the milleu which produced the Chin P'ing Mei. He regards Hsu Wei as the strongest of the possible candidates for authorship of the book" Bibliography See Johns F26, for the trade issue; this proof is not noted.
