Bound in period Half calf over marbled boards, gilt stamped spine title, speckled edges. 18mo (15cm). pp. [2] blank, [i] title, [i] blank, xi, [4] 14-240, [2] blank. Very Good/In mylar protector. Rubbed corners, light foxing progressing internally. By 1838, Brewster was appointed Principal of the United College of St. Salvador and St. Leonard, St. Andrews, &c, &c and had already made significant contributions in physics, astronomy and optics, had invented the kaleidoscope and made improvements to the stereoscope and British lighthouses. This title is listed among his larger separate works and made it into Harper's "Family Library" barely one year after the first London edition of 1841.
