Philadelphia: John Grigg, 1831. First Thus. Octavo (22cm.); publisher's full spotted sheep, black gilt spine label, marbled endpapers; mixed paginations; engraved frontispiece with tissueguard. Boards a bit rubbed along extremities, some brief peeling of leather to upper cover, uneven discoloration to boards from exposure to damp, textblock rather foxed, contemporary ownership inscriptions as well as later ownership rubberstamps to preliminaries, else a Near Very Good example, complete with [3]pp. publisher's advertisements bound in rear.

Brick red smooth leather with spine lettering and decoration in faded gilt and in blind, gilt ruled covers, marbled edges and endpapers, tissue protected frontis engraving, various pagination, about 8.75 inches tall. Front covers holding by binder's cords, uneven coloration to the covers, spine foot chipped, other external wear, binding sound, pages clean, bookplate of Nelson Myles Adcock inside front cover, no other names or markings.. Hard Cover. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

J. B. Lippincott. Good. 1857. Hardcover. ; Tan leather bound cover is lacking spine strip and heavily worn and frayed at extremities. Boards and spine are straight. Binding is tight. Frontispiece protected by tissue. Pages are clean and very good. .

Ownership signature of A. Cleveland Cox (1818-1896, second Episcopal Bishop of Western new York) at the head of the title page and an 1835 gift inscription to him, from his mother, on the front endpaper; the Milton section with marginal ink marking and occasional notes, presumably by Cox, himself a published poet and writer on theological issues. Contemporary black polished calf, boards framed with a single gilt rule, gilt title and ornaments on spine, marbled endpapers and edges.
