He arrived in Van Diemen's Land in October 1812 in the Indefatigable, and was assigned to a Mr. John Ingle, a merchant and grazier.[1] Howe refused the assignment, declaring that, ""having served the King, he would be no man's slave"".[1] He escaped, and joined a large party of escaped convicts in the bush.[2]In May 1814 Howe gave himself up to the authorities in response to an offer of clemency made by Governor Macquarie. Description:
Norfolk, CT: New Directions, 1941. First edition. First printing. Gray paper boards printed in black and fuschia, with a similarly printed dust jacket. One of 300 of a total of 2000. This small volume "contains fifteen poems" for the poem Patterson (sic): volume one of Paterson was published in 1946. Wallace A22. This is a review copy (stamped as usual by ND as such with the date on the ffep). In addition it is poet Ben Belitt's copy. Belitt taught at Bennington College for half a century, and is probably best know as a translator and editor of Pablo Neruda. Boards worn, tips bumped, in a lightly sunned jacket with two chips missing (one on the back panel 1 1/2"X3/4"). Still quite a nice copy, uncommon in boards, quite scarce as a review copy. Very Good in Chipped DJ.

New York: A New Directions Book,, 1946-48-49-51-58. Say it! No ideas but in things First editions, first printings, of Williams's epic poem, Book 2 a review copy from the library of Ruth and Mark Schorer, with their bookplate on the front pastedown and a typed letter signed by the publisher Hubert Creekmore loosely inserted. This is an excellent association, sent to a significant friend and colleague of the author with a request for his comments. Mark Schorer (1908-1977) was a writer and critic, who earned his MA at Harvard and went on to chair the University of California's English Department from 1960 to 1965. He was a witness during the 1957 obscenity trial for Allen Ginsberg's Howl, testifying in defence of the poem. He was one of Williams's "teaching pals" (quoted in Mariani, p. 546), and in his autobiography, Williams recalls attending a two-week English conference in 1946 in Salt Lake City, Utah, where "Walter Van Tilburg Clark, Caroline Gordon, Mark Schorer, all swam with us in a nearby pool… Read More
