Recently rebound in full 'oatmeal' linen cloth, paper spine labels. Pages tanned with some wear, chips, soiling, old mends, small worm holes; first page (the back of the frontispiece engraving) has a plethora of owner's inscriptions, mostly illegible; there are a few others within, but no markings noted within the text; page LIX/LX torn, no loss; page 1/2 missing a small triangular chunk, minor loss of marginal text. Engraved frontispiece, [8], LXVIII, [8], double-page engraving (tear to center crease, light foxing), xvii, [1], 234 pages, engravings heading each saint's life.. First Separate Edition. Hard Cover. 'Antiquitates Apostlicae', or 'The History of Lives of Holy Apostles' is biographical history of the Apostles of Jesus Christ. It contains the lives of Peter, Paul, Andrew, James of Zebedee, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James (the less), Simon, Jude, Matthias, Mark, and Luke.
Note the inclusion of impressive engravings throughout – portraits and iconic Bible scenes.

Folio in full contemporary mottled brown calf with gilt dentelles, nicely rebacked with 19th- or 20th-century calf dyed and treated to match, with raised spine bands, bright brown morocco spine label with gilt title, gilt date at foot (1677), all edges speckled red. Engraved frontispiece, title page in black and red, numerous engravings. Collated and complete. q4 a6-e6 f4, A6-Y6. [7], LXIII, [6], xvii, [1], 234pp. Rubbing and moderate wear, joints dry and finely creased, dentelles partially effaced; contemporary ink name on front free endpaper, later (though not modern) name on front pastedown, frontispiece coming disbound, with 1/2" horizontal tear at right edge, occasional pencil marginalia. Wonderful engravings, including a two-page allegorical spread of the "The Church Catholick" as a cedar tree. Each saint's Life is headed by a devotional image and a depiction of their martyrdom. Bound in mid-19th-century high Victorian green morocco, richly gilt, covers with wheel centerpiece surrounded by 4 raised triangles froming a cross heavily gilt, four gilt stamped raised bands, raised head and tail caps gilt, edges carmine with gilt gauffering, with inner contemporary buckram joint at front and rear. Some loss of upper margin and lower portion of frontispiece. Frontispiece, title, and table mounted, a few marginal repairs, not affecting text. In quarter morocco and cloth folding case.
