Cracking evident in the binding. Yellowing and staining found throughout the interior. Some tearing on interior pages. 768p.

Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co., Philadelphia, 1845. Acceptable. 32mo.; 2,105 p., on thin but very strong paper, clean and unmarked although end pages have penciled notations in back and penciled name of former owner on front end page, where there are two odd closed tears, quite small, in the middle of pages; some pages dog-eared; AEG; gutters cracked and here is some splitting of leather along edges of spine but book square and no pages are detached; black leather boards are bumped and rubbed, esp. the ends of strip that fits into a leather loop on front board. Actually still beautiful, this volume deserves skillful repair.

Very Good. New marbled endpapers. Tiny corner curls but a tight and complete copy. [We restore and rebind all types of Bibles]..

Nine volumes complete - Volume One - Genesis to Numbers, [2], xxii, [480]; Volume Two - Deuteronomy to II Samuel, [402]; Volume Three - Kings to Esther, [412]; Volume Four - Job to Psalms, [374]; Volume Five - Proverbs to Jeremiah, [460]; Volume Six - Ezekiel to Malachi, [400]; Volume Seven - Esdras to Maccabees, [434]; Volume Eight - Matthew to Acts, [404]; and Volume Nine - Romans to Revelations, [462]. Half-calf and cloth, flat raised bands with spine in five panels, gilt title to second panel, volume number to fourth, with gilt floral lozenge centre piece to remaining panels, all panels bordered with gilt double fillet with small corner pieces. Spines slightly faded, rubbed to extremities, cloth is faded (old damp?) to fore-edges. Internally sporadic light foxing and occasional light dust-staining, but generally fairly clean, a few small nicks to page edges, many creases from where the corners have been folded over. A sweet King James pocket bible from the turn of the nineteenth century, in a beautiful red morocco gilt binding, with two early female ownership inscriptions. Cf.Herbert 1439; DM 980.

John Baskerville, 1769. First Thus. Leather Binding. Good. A good copy of Baskerville's first illustrated Bible (following his earlier 1763 edition). A good copy of this folio edition in full period split calf, spine with 6 raised bands and red morocco label, boards panelled and tooled in blind in what appears to be a Cambridge style (the binding is quite heavily rubbed with chipping, loss and stains to spine, chipping and staining to leather on covers; boards heavily rubbed with rounded corners; front and rear free endpapers lacking; frontispiece has heavy dampstaining with some offset to title page; leaf at Genesis V/VI has some creasing and marginal chipping with loss to running heads and notes at foot; some foxing, smudges, soiling, wear, etc.). 7 plates present (the frontispiece and 6 plates in text), which means this copy is lacking at least one and possible two.

Spine, raised bands, gilt tooling, lower joint cracked at head, small mark to lower board. Internally, engraved title page (within black borders), not paginated, signatures A-S2 in eighteens, approx 360 pps, to the end of the Prophets, a.e.g., two columns per page, roman text, contemporary marbled endpapers, list of family member c1745+, . New Testament with separate full title dated 1675, and imprint "Assigns of John Bill and Christopher Barker." Printed marginalia; ruled throughout in red, including NT title. Contemporary forest green sheep, elaborately tooled in gilt (expertly rebacked, with repairs to spine caps and corners). Triple-ruled borders with arabesques; intricate lozenges at both covers; spine with raised bands and gilt compartments (later morocco lettering piece); gilt edges; inner dentelles; marbled endleaves. Text faintly toned, with a few light stains largely confined to the edges; leaf Y8 chipped at fore-edge with slight loss to marginalia, else clean and crisp throughout. A good, complete copy. Full contemporary blue-black morocco (faded to emerald), spine gilt extra, narrow gilt borders on boards, marbled endsheets, a.e.g. Fore-corners bumped, joints a bit worn (but not cracked), lower fore- corners of several leaves exhibit an old ink stain (with old mends to two corners), but otherwise an attractive copy. The Baskerville Bible, one of the highpoints of the imprint, and indeed, of all English Bible-making, was printed in an edition of 1250 copies, priced at four guineas. This copy of what Dibdin declared "one of the most beautifully printed books in the world," has the subscribers list in the third state, concluding with the entry for Charles York. Such an ambitious undertaking stretched Baskerville's finances to their limits, and of necessity, in 1768, he remaindered 556 copies to the London bookseller, R. Baldwin, at 36s each.
