New York: The New Republic, 1937. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Very Good. Paperback, tan illustrated wraps, 7-1/2" x 4-7/8", 298 pp. + publishers' ads. Short tear to bottom of front joint, what appears to be silverfish nibbling to some areas of wraps (no bugs now), some toning to spine. Inscribed thus: "Roger Senhouse | from | Edmund Wilson | 1941. | no sincerity, no sandwiches -- that's your motto, is it? -- Act II, 'Dangerous Corner' JBP". Roger Senhouse was then co-owner of Secker and Warburg; he knew both Wilson and Priestley (he introduced Wilson to Sartre's works, and worked with both authors); Priestley's line about the sandwiches refers to the false illusion of comfort and security created by wealth and status. Wilson would have enjoyed that; perhaps it inspired the title to this collection? A nice association copy.
