Description:
Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1877. First Edition, First State. Cloth. Very good +. 255 p. 16 cm. Brown cloth hardcover with black and gold impressing. In brown wrap around folder and slipcase. All edges red. Corners a little bumped. Hinges starting internally. First edition, first state of Jewett's first book, with "was" at the end of the 16th line on p. 65, later changed to "so." The author, from South Berwick, Maine, first began writing these tales set in the imaginary "Deephaven" for the Atlantic Monthly in 1868 when she was only 19 years old. The book was an immediate success, coming out at a time when the enthusiasm for regional studies of America was its height. Her stories emphasized local colour, not plot, and she possessed a keen descriptive gift that William Dean Howells called "an uncommon feeling for talk — I hear your people." Feminist critics have championed Jewett's writing for its rich account of women's lives and voices.

Light brown cloth with front panel and spine stamped in black and gilt. All edges gilt. Tissue guarded title page in black and red. First issue (or second, as there appears to be no differentiation between the two, BAL 10871) with "was" as the last word in line 16 on page 65 (changed to "so" in third and later printings). The volume is lightly edge rubbed, with a gently toned spine and occasional soiling. The front hinge is just starting and there is mild foxing to the preliminary and terminal pages.
