Random House; (1939). First Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. First printing of the author's first novel, after three books of poetry. Very good in a very good dust jacket. Foredge of page block and a few internal pages have some minor soiling. The rear endpaper has what appears to be a glue stain across the top of the page, maybe indicating a bookplate or some sort of label was affixed there at one time. There is no evidence that this is an ex-library copy; other than the minor staining, there is no writing or marking anywhere in the book. The title on the spine and front board is in gilt, and the gilt is a little dulled both places. The jacket has small chips at the spine ends and corners; one chip slightly affecting the "H" in the author's first name near the top of the spine. Square and firmly bound with a black top stain, clean internally. The first published novel from the author of The Big Clock, the story of Hudson General Hospital and what happened when "a drink-crazed janitor ran amok in the power room, throwing missiles and pulling switches.
