Illustrated with many text-cuts [Zimmer calls for 97 figures]. The lithographed double elephant FOLIO VOLUME OF PLATES published a year earlier (1860), is NOT present. Bound in full gilt-tooled maroon leather with 5 raised bands. All edges gilt. The bindings are in Poor-Fair condition. A few front and rear boards are no longer attached, although all are still present. Some marbled endpapers are also separated. Audubon created 65 new images for the octavo edition of 1827-38; the original configurations were altered so that only on species is depicted per plate. The Octavo edition of Audubon's Birds was probably the greatest commercial success of any color plate book issued in the 19th century America. While Audubon had become internationally famous in the course of producing the double-elephant folio edition of the Birds in London between 1826 and 1839, it was the octavo version, issued at $100, which achieved widespread circulation and brought the work into the homes of many well-to-do Americans.
