Emerging from a confused Franco Spanish background and retaining Spanish Law for some period, the island was under populated and underdeveloped at the time of the British conquest in 1797. A period of rapid expansion soon began, but within a short period colony was faced with the dislocations caused by the emancipation of the slaves. It is with this early period of British rule and the background to it that Lionel Mordaunt Fraser's exhaustive work is concerned.
