The work began as ""a short prose piece, written about 1954-55, a step towards a novel soon abandoned"" and Beckett's ""first text written in English since Watt."" Though initially published as a theater piece by the British publisher Faber and Faber following its performance on the BBC, it is now ""generally anthologized with Beckett's short fiction"".

The first edition.'From an Abandoned Work' is an early work by Samuel Beckett, originally broadcasted on the Third Programme on BBC Radio 3 in 1957.The work is a short story told in a first person narrative, revolving around three days in the life of an neurotic elderly man, in which he remembers his past.Three newspaper clippings about Beckett loosely inserted. In the original publisher's paper wraps. Externally, smart. A little discolouration to the wraps, heavier to the rear wrap. Small chip to the head of the rear wrap. Light cockling to the flyleaves. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good

A fragment of an unfinished novel, written ca. 1955, featuring the musings of a neurotic man. Beckett told his bibliographers that the fragment resulted from an attempt to return to fiction in English. "Asked why it ends abruptly, he replied, 'there was just no more to be said.'" Our copy is the first appearance of "From an Abandoned Work" in book form. Trinity News, the student newspaper at the University of Dublin (Beckett's alma mater), first published the fragment in 1956. That was followed by a reprint in the Evergreen Review and a broadcast by the BBC in 1957. Federman and Fletcher 33.
