Original green cloth with titles stamped in gilt on front board and spine. Square , tight and clean throughout with a touch of wear to spine ends and top front tip lightly bumped. Very well preserved. Very attractive and quite scarce in any condition unclipped dust-jacket, ($2.00 on middle of front flap), has a piece out at the heel, fairly moderate soiling. A few closed tears and general edge-wear. Still bright and fresh. A very pretty collectabe copy of an uncommon title and extraordinarily tough to find in jacket. (Hubin p.225).

From a large collection of books we recently purchased from his library. Kauffman was born and lived in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, although he also maintained homes in Switzerland and Bath, Maine. After graduating from Harvard in 1900, he wrote dozens of stories, mysteries, children's books, and non-fiction titles. He was the editor of the Bangor, Maine *Daily News* from 1941-1947. His novel *The House of Bondage* was widely praised, specifically by Emma Goldman, as the first serious attempt to explore the problem of women and prostitution.
