Top edge blue, the rest untrimmed. Interior bright and clean, faintly marked here and there. Endpapers toned, light pencil inscription to flyleaf. Edges toned. Binding toned, especially spine. Light bumping to extremities, some tearing to headcap. Very good. Stein's first published and thus critically acclaimed literary work, released initially in 1909 by The Grafton Press. Details the lives of three different working-class women living in the fictional town of Bridgepoint.

A British printing of the second American edition which is comprised of the sheets printed by Boni in New York with the cancelled title leaf and a British binding. This is Stein's first published work, a collection of three short stories in which she explores the mental processes of three women. Stein (1874-1946), an American author, abandoned her medical studies at Johns Hopkins about three months shy of earning her M.D. She moved to Paris, where she was involved in the modern art movement, encouraging and supporting the work of such painters as Picasso and Matisse. She also had a great influence on the works of writers such as Hemingway and Fitzgerald, who were both involved in the cultural salon that she led. BMC, XXIV, 252.

Later edition of Gertrude Stein's first published book; a trio of novellas from the perspective of different women, dealing with race, gender, romance, and other themes, each set in the fictional town of Bridgeport, Maryland. Written in Stein's repetitive and simple prose, a modernist style which is said to build upon itself. Text is unmarked. Red cloth with gilt lettering, over patterned cloth. Small chips and tears to the publisher's dustjacket, and sunning to the spine. Very Good binding / Very Good dust jacket.

The first English edition of the author's first book, one of 300 copies (from an initial print run of 1,000 which made up the 1909 first edition) printed and bound in the US and offered to the UK market with a cancel title page but retaining the US publisher's imprint at the base of the backstrip. 8vo. 279pp. Blue vertically ribbed cloth lettered in gold at the spine and upper board. Cloth rubbed at the spine ends, with a little loss, and with just a touch of further chafing to the corner tips. Masonic bookplate (Library of the Masonic Homes Elizabethtown, PA.) to the front pastedown alongside a similar inkstamp and with a second stamp to the base of a single text leaf. A lengthy but superficial crease to the half-title, and with a short tear to the head of one text leaf, and one more to the base of another. A very good copy of an uncommon book.
