Medium cracking to hinges and gutters, with exposed netting, boards are loose. Pages have light tanning and foxing throughout. Sticker to front pastedown. Tears to some pages, text remains unaffected. Boards have moderate shelf-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Light tanning to spine and edges with crushing to spine ends. Splits to spine ends causing cloth to be frayed. Wear marks overall.

With an illustrated frontispiece. A biography of Francis of Assisi, originally Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, an Italian mystic and Catholic friar who founded the brotherhood of the Franciscans. Considered one of the most venerated figures in Christianity, he was canonised by Pope Gregory IX as of 1228. Written by Margaret Oliphant, under the pen name Mrs Oliphant, a Scottish novelist and historical writer. Bound in full vellum with gilt decoration. Externally, very smart with light shelf wear and the odd small mark to the board. Minor discolouration to the vellum as is typical with ageing. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd spot. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Very Good Indeed
