Light wear to top edge of text block. Sparse marginalia to one page, otherwise text and images unmarked. Well worn dust jacket (original price of $12.50 on front flap) shows rubbing, creasing, chipping and small edge tears with dates written in pen on both flaps. Dust jacket in a mylar cover. Gutter code P38 on page 432.

First Edition. 8vo up to 9½" tall., xiv + 432pp. with 10 colour illustrations, 36 black and white photographs and in text illustrations by Brooks. Quarter black cloth over olive boards, silver spine titles; tail edge speckled. Contents in fine, unmarked condition; light age toning to board edges; unclipped jacket has light shelf wear. Romaine Brooks (1874- 1970) was an American painter who worked mostly in Paris and Capri. She specialized in portraiture and used a subdued palette dominated by the color gray and considered part of the Symbolist and Aesthetic movements of the 19th century. Her subjects ranged from anonymous models to titled aristocrats. She is best known for her images of women in androgynous or masculine dress.
