Original brown decorated cloth publisher's covers with gilt spine lettering encased in a cream-colored slipcase. This is a nice clean, tight and unmarked book with no interior or exterior markings, no previous owner names and no bookplates. The slipcase is also in nice condition with no tears or splits. The Heritage Press imprint indicates it was published in 1968; however, the Norwalk place of publication means that it was published sometime between 1976 and 1983. ; B&W Illustrations; 8vo, 8"- 9" tall; 351 pages .

The author, title, and publisher are on the spine, also in a blue bo. The spine is faded and difficult to read. The pages are in good condition with no writing, creases, or tears. The edges of the pages are blue to match the color on the cover. The slipcover shows wears but is sturdy.

In late 1809, Washington Irving completed work on his first major book, A History of New-York from the Beginning of the World to the End of the Dutch Dynasty, by Diedrich Knickerbocker, a satire on self-important local history and contemporary politics. Prior to its publication, Irving started a hoax akin to today's viral marketing campaigns; he placed a series of missing person adverts in New York newspapers seeking information on Diedrich Knickerbocker, a crusty Dutch historian who had allegedly gone missing from his hotel in New York City. As part of the ruse, Irving placed a notice-allegedly from the hotel's proprietor-informing readers that if Mr. Knickerbocker failed to return to the hotel to pay his bill, he would publish a manuscript Knickerbocker had left behind.
