Quarto. 536pp. Illustrated in black and white. Embossed, black clothcovered boards with gilt on the spine. Fair only with all of the maps detached from the binding yet present with some of them a bit torn but not affecting the images, two maps missing, ink check marks on the Index to Illustrations, three inches of loss to the top of the spine, scattered internal dampstaining, and wear to the boards. The two maps missing are "Boundary Line Between the Whites and Indians, 1768" and "Sauthier's Map of the Province of New York in 1779.

Arranged under the direction of Christopher Morgan, Volume III only (of 4 volumes), 1198pps + index, G+ as usual wear and spine retaped, contains 19 of the original 24 authentic ill. There are 3 facsimiles and two ill. are missing; there are also two extra ill. Documents relate to exploration, restoration of NY to the English, Suffolk County, NYC, slaves of 1755, Albany, Ulster and other counties, prices of land in the State, Western Waters, Long island, medals and coins, missionary tour through the Mohawk amd Black River countries in 1802, etc. Terrific research material.

Thick 8vo, cloth, spine gilt lettering, illustrated, 786 [1], 1211 [1], 1215, 1144 pp. Some hinges a little weak, spines are chipped and torn, with a few pieces missing, or loose, some edgewear, pages 3 & 4 of volume two torn with some loss of text, spine gilt lettering a little faded, some edgewear and foxing, small tear to large folding map (map still in really good shape), missing 1779 map of New York in volume one, minor aging and foxing.
Edmund Bailey O'Callaghan (1797-1880) was born in Ireland, but immigrated to Canada in 1823. He was a doctor and journalist by training, but was also politically active, and left Canada after participating in some activities in Montréal, which ended in a riot. He would practice medicine after moving to Albany, but would also become the secretary-archivist for the state of New York.
