Jerusalem Delivered is a romantic epic poem that was first published in Italian in 1581. The poem focuses on the First Crusade, led by Godfrey of Bouillon, in which Christians battled Muslims in order to take over Jerusalem. It was written during the Italian Renaissance, and is largely mystified in it's telling of the real historical event, taking poetic liberties to make the event more exciting and readable.The poem was written by the Italian Torquato Tasso, who is best known for this poem. Vol. 1 is the second printing of 1807, (virtually identical to first edition of 1794) Vol. 2 is the first edition thus, published in 1794. Printed by Bodoni. There was also an imperial quarto edition which is often erroneously catalogued as a folio. Text in Italian. Both volumes were contemporaneously bound in identical half-leather with marbled boards, endpapers and edges. Both bear book plates on f.e.p. for John Walbanke Childers. Following title page in Vol. 1 is a dedication page which bears the text, "All' augustissimo cattolico monarca delle Spagne Carlo IV di Borbone imperadore delle Indie, ec.; Giambatista Bodoni suo tipographo di camera."
