Considered one of the first feminist novels, this semi-autobiographical novel follows the story of three children who live on a farm in South Africa. A long inscription of the passage beginning "And I dreamed a dream" from the book is written on the front free end paper with the former owner's name beneath this reading Cornelia A. Smith, Bethel, Connecticut, 11-31-'01. Brick red cloth binding with gilt and black decorations and titles on front cover and spine., no copyright page. Some fading of cover gilt and decorations, especially at spine, light edge wear with a little spotting, short tear in cloth at top of spine, corners and spine ends bumped, purple stamp and notation on front fixed end paper with 1926 date, interior pages lightly tanned, binding tight, small chip in back fixed end paper. Measures 5 x 7 1/2 inches.
