Description:
Boston: Little, Brown And Company, 1963. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. 8vo; xiv, 223 pages, tan cloth Jessie was the daughter of Sen. Thomas Hart Benton of Missouri, a lion of the U. S. Senate. Against his will, she married John Fremont, an impecunious military man. Fremont ended up with astonishing career, becoming ( among many things) "The Pathfinder", and the first candidate of the new Republican Party for President of the United States in 1856 - and Jessie was the woman behind the man, and here is her story. Ruth was a biographer of women who was married to Prof. Randall, the first scholarly biographer of Lincoln. Here she was inspired by using over 300 unpublished letters between the Fremonts.
