Oblong Quarto. 117 (1)pp. Original tan cloth with black lettering on cover, in original photo-illustrated dustjacket, white lettering on spine. Tan endpapers. "Since its purchase in 1869, three quarters of a million people have been buried on Hart Island making it the most dense cemetery in America. This public burial ground is difficult to visit because it is administered by the prison authorities. Inmates serving short-term sentences are bused in from nearby Riker's Island to perform the daily burials... The Hart Island Project is about revisiting these fragments in photographs, stories, documents, installations and public art. It parallels the experiences of many people in search of their beginnings in America. The project began seven years ago at the confluence of three major events in my life: naturalization, the death of my mother, and the birth of my second child.… Read More

Zurich: Scalo, 1998. Hardcover. SIGNED. First edition, first printing. Fine hardcover in a Fine dust jacket, protected by a clear mylar cover. BOOKS SHIP THE NEXT BUSINESS DAY, WRAPPED IN PADDING, IN A BOX. "Hart Island, the Bronx, in the Long Island Sound, commonly known as Potter's Field, once served as a cemetery, a charity hospital for women, an insane asylum, and as a prison island. Today, the island is once again a cemetery. Inmates from Rikers Island perform the burials and disinterments and maintain the burial grounds. Hart Island is not open to the public. Joel Sternfeld and conceptual artist Melinda Hunt collaborated on this project and demonstrate a new approach to urban history. Sternfeld's precise and elegiac pictures of the island and the convicts at work are complemented by Hunt's objects and installations." Photographs by Joel Sternfeld; text and artwork by Melinda Hunt. SIGNED BY STERNFELD on the half-title; no inscription. 119 pages; 60 color plates + 1 b&w… Read More
